To be honest with you I was less than impressed with the recommendation that I was given and was frequently left pissed off at my absence of progress. The speech specialists appeared to have an absence of knowledge of this kind of speech impediment and at times looked at me as if I was insane. For instance I tried to elucidate to one such speech specialist about the difficulties I had when ordering drinks at a bar. As we hear dictation and our fingers fly across the keys, something unique is happening-we are soaking up info that is being stored in our memory banks. My partner was curious as to how I knew that and I proudly claimed I learned it while working on my genetic medical reports. By actually listening to and not just hearing what's transcribed, the MT gains a valuable education in any and all specialties they're employed on. Much of what we learn while transcribing becomes 2nd nature-we hear it so frequently we all know when a term is off kilter or merely not really right.
The Net provides unending avenues for research. If you're employed in a medical office setting, take some time to ask the doctor questions-you would be confounded at how frequently they are prepared to expound on their area of expertise. TV can regularly be another avenue for continued learning. The fear previously, wishing that there would not be a queue, pointing to the precise drink, the speech consultant looked at me as if I was living on a different planet. All of this was going down around 15 years and I am pleased to report the treatments for stammering and stuttering have improved a large amount since that point. There are now consultant stuttering courses which are held on an one-to-one basis and which run by folks who have formerly had a stammer / stutter. There's routinely a three-four month waiting period to visit the course due to its recognition however there are self-help products like a DVD and ebook that folk can watch and read while awaiting their course date to arrive.
